“Scène ouverte” Show

September 29, as part of the annual “Journées de la culture”

The Filles électriques production company aims to promote new voices - those of emerging artists as well as varied sounds and styles. We invite you to come and take part in our informal, festive evening of performance: “Scène ouverte!” On this evening we will get the chance to hear your work and see you perform - an excellent opportunity for us to get to know you and potentially open the door to a possible spot in the “Festival Voix d’Amériques.” We will be paying particular attention to young artists who approach us - especially those whom we may not have had the chance to see on stage before. Now is the time to sign up to present your five-minute “showcase.” Please be aware: we’re looking at fairly low-tech, lo-fi presentations, so if you’re thinking of bringing along an entire sound-system and the Salvation Army Marching Band… that may be overdoing it. It is advisable to check in with us concerning tech needs before planning anything too elaborate.

This performance evening is part of our “Journées de la Culture” get-together. To begin, in the afternoon we’ll be offering a writing workshop to students from grade 6 class of Laurier School. Then the Caniche Hara-Kiri group will present a wild “5 à 7”. Finally, starting at 8pm, there will be the mega-jam with the registered performers and poets who will also get the wonderful opportunity to be accompanied by the super-musicians from Caniche. All this will be followed by an open-mic open to all.

All activities involved with the “Journées de la culture” are expected to be free of charge, and as a result we do not have any budget set aside to create this event. This means it’s all carried out by volunteers - with a large dose of simplicity and good intentions thrown in. We did get an alcohol permit, however and the profits from beer sales will be divided up among the musicians. You will all be drinking, then, for a good cause!

If you are interested in participating, you must register by contacting lesfilles@electriques.ca. Don’t forget: the Filles électriques will only feature artists (whether poet, storyteller, performer, or singer) who perform original works (i.e.: leave the Leonard Cohen poem or Dylan song at home!)

When? Where? How Much? What kind of attire?

Friday September 29, 2006 at the Studio Off-Interarts
5145, boulevard Saint-Laurent (between Laurier and Fairmount)

The performance evening starts at 8pm (following the “5 à 7” by Caniche Hara-Kiri) and ends… when we decide it’s over!

Oh… and you can dress however you feel like dressing.

I hope that you’ll come and take part in helping to create a new, spontaneous, generous, informal, and surprisingly excellent cabaret soirée. Let’s hear it for risk-taking! Let’s hear it for imperfection! And three cheers for courage, sincerity and the “work in progress!”
