Vocalist and saxophone player Joane Hétu was born in Montreal in 1958. She has been active in music since 1980 and has become one of the pillars of contemporary music in Canada. A composer, songwriter and improviser, Hétu was one of the founding members of the Justine and Wondeur Brass creative collectives. Since 1992 she has directed her own ensemble, Castor et compagnie, and has been working with Jean Derome as Nous perçons les oreilles. Her discography lists more than a dozen releases, including Musique d’hiver (2001), Seule dans les chants (2000), Castor et compagnie / Mets ta langue (1995-1998), and Nous perçons les oreilles (2002, 1998). She is also director of the DAME (Distribution Ambiances Magnétiques Etcetera) record label, co-director of Productions SuperMusique and a member of Ambiances Magnétiques.
