Mankind

→ See also our artist page for Mankind.

Founded in 2006, Mankind is a duo comprised of performers Alexis O’Hara and D. Kimm. They explore the spaces between sound poetry, noise and ambient music and performed provocation. Their shows are always fresh, rich in improvisation and abetted by the use of props, costumes and video projection. Their most recent show Bad Behaviour / La mauvaise conduite, presented with a spring 2008 European tour, explored — and deplored, notions of feminine etiquette and the norms of polite society.

Mankind has been featured in the following festivals: Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville, Edgy Women and Suoni Per Il Popolo (both in Montreal), Poesie Berlin Festival (Germany), Donau Festival (Autria), Musique Action et Montevidéo (France), Howl (USA). Their 2009 debut CD Ice Machine is released by Ambiances Magnétiques.

Mankind Manifesto

Our Weakness is our Strength. Experts at Nothing, We are Fresh and Naïve, Curious and Open to all Discipline, Media, Philosophy or Technique. That said, we have an Opinion on Everything and will Speak it regardless of whether it is asked of Us. We find Comfort to be Perplexing. We strive for Imperfection. We privilege an Equal Partnership with Technology. We will submit, on occasion, to the Will of the Machine but only in an Exploratory and Temporary Manner. We Know What We Are Doing. We recognize the trappings of the Feminine Condition, We favour its Benefits. We seek out Beauty as well as Trouble. Transcending the Palpable and the Impalpable, We are Mankind.

In the evening after the Resofit stand-up benefit for the station, Resonance present a night of live music with superlative songwriter Robyn Hitchcock; Kiss Akabusi, masters of deconstructed Black Metal/Chinese pop/Reggae; and special guests from Quebec, the duo Mankind, who come to us recommended by American poet Bob Holman (”two hilarious French Canadian supervixen poet rockstars with dark techno deep beat… the best poetry act out of North America since — duh, David Thomas? Patti Smith?”). Plus Resonance DJs and more.
